Sunday (Monday) 3/30/26

March 30, 2026

On Sundays I reflect.

I didn’t drink alcohol this week.

On my day off from my driving job, I drove almost five hours to Craig Colorado to visit the DMV and renew my driver’s license. Instead of driving the Yukon, I borrowed a client’s race car and ripped it up a two lane mountain road.

It was just the drive I needed.

I sold a lot of cups this week. It felt like the good old days. We’re slowly making space on the shelves for new work in the gallery and it’s not feeling so crowded in there.

On Friday, two local artists had shows in Vail. A group of us from the local arts community met in town and started the afternoon off with Gus at Squash Blossom. Gus is a painter who won last year’s art battle and had the first residency in the new Vail Ford Art Studio. His work is abstract figurative and his exploration of color is tremendous. I’ve been watching his work evolve for nearly as long as I’ve been in Vail.

After a quick dinner we made our way to Chasing Rabbits for the first solo show of my friend Gonzalo Pizarro produced by Chicago Gallery Artist Replete. The room was full and the work was incredible. Major congratulations to my friend and thanks to everyone who showed up.

I met Gonzo two summers ago when he was showing his art at a fair in Nottingham Park in Avon. I walked past most of the booths without paying much notice. I was with my parents and Ray who used to create pottery at my studio.

When I first saw his work, I knew Gonzo was on another level. I invited him to my studio, and he agreed to show a piece at my gallery for an event we had.

Gonzo has a background in architecture in Argentina where he is from. He uses OSB plywood as his medium, along with black ink and charcoal and shading to create negative space. His pieces are masterfully made, taking hundreds of hours. In his talk he said he is in constant negotiation with the OSB. He decides, or allows the wood to decide which wood chips will remain brown and which will outline his compositions.

I really think he is an artistic genius, and I love talking to him about process and inspiration. It was such an honor to be at his first solo show, and to see his largest work sell on the first night at the opening.

“Past, Present, Future”

So now I’m in the Eagle airport preparing to depart for Miami where I’ll spend time with my family. We will celebrate Passover together, along with my brother’s birthday. I feel grateful to be able to prioritize this time with my family.

This trip is also a much needed break from my bubble. I don’t think I’ve left Vail since my December trip. I love Vail and it’s my home, but sometimes I need to get out and remind myself of the outside world.

Thanks for tuning in and enjoy your Sunday,

BB
