Sunday 5/17/26

May 17, 2026

On Sundays I reflect.

I didn’t drink alcohol this week.

We’ve been hosting my friend and colleague Ethan Meyer for a residency this week. We’re all having a great time creating at the studio.

Ian came back to town last week to assist with the project and when Ethan landed we hit the ground running.

Alex Ubatuba came up for two days to sculpt a glass radiolarian which Ethan has been decorating with fiber. This is an object unlike any other in existence. It may be the coolest thing ever made at my studio.

Eusheen came up and attempted his largest disc ever, at almost a foot in diameter and consuming almost a half tube of 75x5. As he was installing his 12 or 13 linework section we didn’t have enough heat on the piece and it tragically cracked. Sometimes that’s the way it goes and I hope we can reapproach the project one day.

In the background Ian and Matty B have been pulling stringers for Ethan to stack into a murrine that we pulled down last night. I can’t wait to see it cooled down today.

Town is still quiet for the off season but some of our local artists Andrew Pranger, Kelle Roberts, and Jackie Popovic have been able to come meet Ethan and see what we’re cooking in the studio.

Ethan and I go back a decade, having connected through his collecting of glass art and then us meeting at the fairs where he shows with Duane Reed Gallery. In addition to being a prolific artist, Ethan is also a gallery director whom I love talking to about art and consulting with about the market.

Today, I get to finish my cube sculpture with Ian for Ethan to embellish. It will be our first collaboration. All the parts and pieces are coming together and now we get to attempt assembly.

A few nights ago I took Ethan to Aspen where we popped in a few galleries together. We left one laughing with each other at how bad the work was, but mostly it was impressive. Another friend Aggie played a concert with her band at the Wheeler Opera House which we attended before visiting the closing party for her show at the Aspen Collective Gallery. Aggie was showing 11 original ink drawings, each of which paired with a musical composition she also created. The center piece was a large interactive macrame hanging installation which I had seen in process months ago and was thrilled to get to see the finished piece in the gallery.

So it’s been a week of art. Driving is light. This time of year there are very few distractions, but summer is right around the corner.

If you’re interested in seeing what we’ve been working on with Ethan please reach out and I can share some images and available work. I’m a long time fan of Ethan’s art and it’s a real honor to have been able to host him this week and work together finally. My recently acquired (finally) painting from Ethan hangs in my bedroom and we have a few of his works (fiber and painting) in the gallery. I couldn’t be more excited to continue developing this glass series with one of my favorite artists.

I want to keep writing as always, but it’s time to turn on torches and the kiln.

Thanks for tuning in and allowing us to bring projects like this to life.

Enjoy your Sunday,

BB
