On Sundays I reflect.
I didn’t drink alcohol this week. That choice keeps feeling better and better.
I’ve been catching up on sleep this week. Driving is still light. The residency with Ethan Meyer and the team took a lot out of me and I’m grateful to have this time to recover. We pulled almost ten days of 12-16 hours of work.
It’s still quiet in Vail, but summer is just around the corner.
I’ve been a bit all over with music lately, but the drum n bass is still the rhythm of my life.
The cube we made with Ethan was a major breakthrough for Ian and I. We’re preparing for our class at Anderson Ranch and continuing to develop and push the “rod bending” sculptural technique. I’ve been receiving compliments from mentors who helped me get here, and from artists who implement the same techniques and recognize how challenging these sculptures are. It’s a good reminder I’m on the right track. Right now I couldn’t do it as clean without Ian, and he might even say the same about me. It’s a fun team project and we’re just getting started.
I’m cleaning up the studio and making the space more efficient. We’ve got corporate groups coming through this summer for workshops and I need to elevate the presentation a bit.
Ian and I made some bongs for some collectors and friends. I haven’t made bongs in a long time. That’s been a fun project.
Thursday I hosted my monthly art talk with Andrew Pranger. If you haven’t seen his paintings, you’re missing out on a legend. The dude is good. This month we invited gallerist Marc LeVarn of the Vail International Gallery to speak to our group and share his perspective with us. As always it was a great chat full of so much insight. Cultivating the local arts scene has been a priority for me while also bringing out internationally acclaimed artists to work here.
It was a few rough years there. That’s how art goes: strikes and gutters. It feels like we’re coming back around. I’m throwing rocks tonight.
I turned my torch on yesterday and made a twisty cup. When the kiln cooled I jumped on a live stream and sold it. I’m going to try to keep building inventory between everything else. Blowing glass is fun.
I think it’s time to get out of bed and head to the village for coffee and breakfast at Two Arrows. Maybe I’ll turn my torch on today. Who knows?
Enjoy your Sunday,
BB
