Sunday 4/7/24

April 07, 2024

On Sundays I reflect.

I had a few beers this week. I also went out this week and didn’t drink. It’s better when I don’t.

Yesterday I got a surprise powder day on my snowboard at Vail. My friend Adam and I hit most of my runs and it felt like winter. I think it was the last one of the season, but we’ll see.

We’re still working on the expansion at the studio. It’s nice having more people there regularly. We have new creative energy and collaboration has already begun. Ray, a ceramicist who goes by Meatslaw has been reproducing our classic DV fumer mug in the studio on her wheel. Soon we’ll be able to offer our designs in both glass and pottery versions.

I got on the torch a bit this week myself, working on collaborations for the upcoming Connecticut Cup Collectors Club at Stoked on May 18. We are getting super excited for this one, and details will be released soon!

I’ve been making an effort lately to get out of my bubble. I am putting more effort into my social life outside the studio. Most days I’ve been driving to the village to get a coffee at Two Arrows. By now I know most of the people working there, and I try to meet new people and stay off my phone when I’m there.

When I lived in NYC a decade ago I tried to meet five strangers a day. Most days I was successful. It’s different in a small town but I’m making a conscious effort to socialize rather than recluse at the studio.

On Friday night there was a big concert in Vail at the Ford Amphitheatre. Some friends came up from Denver to see Bob Moses and Daily Bread and almost everyone I know from Vail was there. Sometimes it surprises me how many people I actually know and that night was one of those times.

I have experienced loneliness in much of my life, often stemming from the fact that I’m different than most people. Sometimes when I tell people this they are surprised because of how many friends I have and how many people know me when I go out.

Despite having some social anxiety, it has never been especially hard for me to meet people. I talk to strangers often. I eat meals alone in restaurants sometimes and talk to the bartenders or people sitting near me.

My driving gig is wrapping up for the season. It’s been a good job and great side money. I’ll stay on call but only anticipate sporadic work as we enter the off season here in the mountains.

Some of my friends bumped into me around town and let me know they have an extra ticket to a Drum N Bass show in Denver in a few days. They told me the ticket was mine if I was available and they would give me a ride. They know I love DNB and told me they want me to join them. It feels good to be included. I’m looking forward to seeing Chase & Status, a UK duo at Cervantes this week with the crew.

I want to write more but I need to get my day going. Yesterday I tried driving to Denver after the hill for the opening of the Elbo store. Weather was not agreeable and once I got to Silverthorne I had to turn around and come back to Vail. Sometimes that’s how it goes, but it would have been nice to catch up with everyone.

It’s time to make a smoothie and get over to the studio. As always, thanks for tuning in.
