On Sundays I reflect.
I didn’t drink alcohol this week. It feels good to write that week after week.
I spent the beginning of the week with Grace in the studio. For a few years Grace was at the studio almost every day creating content during a special time for Drinking Vessels. We traveled the country attending and producing shows, and at some point I didn’t even need to tell her what was needed. She’s intuitive and part of the identity of Drinking Vessels, which she embodied in her work.
Without Grace and as the market shifted, I’ve fallen behind on content and product upload. Grace agreed to come from Michigan to spend a few days shooting products in the lightbox and working on product upload and other content.
Mostly we were locked in on work at the studio, which was good timing being the off season in Vail where almost everything is closed. We made a few trips to town, but mostly filled our time with work. Together we were able to get pretty close to caught up, although my checklist included endless projects and assignments.
In the coming weeks we will be releasing new work on the website which we are excited to share with you. Sorry it’s been so long since we had fresh inventory, but we’re thrilled to finally get back in the groove.
It was also nice just to catch up with an old friend, whom I have only seen once since she moved out of Vail. Thanks Grace for being such a good friend and supporter.
This weekend I met my dad in Bentonville Arkansas on what was supposed to be a guys trip with my brother. Unfortunately at the last minute my brother had to cancel, but my dad and I had a great time exploring together.
Bentonville is the mountain biking capital of the country, maybe the world. We rented e-bikes one day but rather than trail riding we used them to just get around town.
The highlight for me, aside from spending quality time with my dad, was of course the Crystal Bridges Museum.
Funded and donated by the Walton family, this collection is out of this world impressive. We spent hours taking it all in. It’s hard to describe what all we saw, because it was overwhelmingly amazing from one room to the next. The architecture and design is equally as impressive as the collection of art housed there, which includes a deconstructed and reconstructed Frank Lloyd Wright home originally built in New Jersey and transported to the museum grounds.
Today we’re just hanging out until our flights home, and it seems I’ll arrive to snow in the mountains tonight.
I’ll spend the next two weeks preparing for our next residency at the studio featuring Ethan Meyer and the team of glass artists who will be collaborating to bring Ethan’s art to glass. Ian will be back, Alex Ubatuba and Eusheen will be coming up from Evergreen, and Matty B from Leadville. This team is very special and we are all learning from each other through these projects. I feel very privileged to be able to host and bring these artists together and I can’t wait to see what we can make this time.
I want to keep writing but I would rather spend time being present with my dad. This weekend I’ve been able to mostly stay off my phone and disconnect from work and home life. It’s rare that I can get out of that mentality, and part of choosing Bentonville as a destination was to get away from distractions allowing me to be here now.
Driving should be light the next few weeks before summer, which will allow me to focus my energy on the studio and the torch. I have some commissions I’ll begin prepping for this week, along with some stuff I want to make for fun on the torch. It feels good to be able to approach the studio and torch again after a brief time away, and I’m excited to make art.
Enjoy your Sunday,
BB
