On Sundays I reflect.
I didn’t drink alcohol this week. I also didn’t have time to write a blog last week.
I spent the week in the studio with Ian. I needed a week on the torch.
Last week I was on call 24/7 for a family I have driven before. We get along and they’ve decided they want me as their personal driver when they visit Vail, so they book me around the clock to be on call. It’s an incredible gig, and at the end of our week together they invited me on their yacht when I am in Miami next.
That gig allowed me to take this week off from driving, mostly. It’s super convenient it went this way, because Ian had booked flights to come develop a curriculum for our upcoming class at Anderson Ranch.
I still had to get in the car and work a few runs this week to not leave the team hanging, but I was on the torch every day with Ian.
We started the week by making a six pack of twisty cups with Jen Stark accent millie after the last batch sold so fast. A few of these new ones found homes and a few are still available. We then got into a few commissions including a cup and a pipe and some other odds and ends.
The rest of the week was spent bending and welding rods and shapes we made together. We made triangles and circles and squares. We also put them together in 3D prisms and other arrangements. It’s a fun project and allows us to work together on both fabrication and problem solving.
After some warming up, we created a prism sculpture with another millie slice from Jen as the focal point. I thought I grabbed our cheapest color; Cobalt. As we began cutting and melting Ian quickly determined I had grabbed our most expensive color Gold Amythest. Thankfully we didn’t fuck it up.
As the week went on we decided to tackle my logo and created two six inch glass renderings. We chose a trio of colors for each one and they went surprisingly smoother than either of us expected. I can’t believe it took me ten years to tackle this project.
It’s been fun. That’s for sure.
The ideas are flowing between Ian and myself. We’re excited to keep exploring this technique, and along the way as we experiment we are also developing a week long intensive workshop on the particular technique we’re getting into.
I’m sitting in the coffee shop with distractions hitting me from every direction. It’s nice to have friends and community out here these days. Usually I write these blogs in solitude.
Things feel like they’re happening at a hundred miles an hour these days. After a few slow years it’s an adjustment but I’m thrilled to be this busy.
This week I’m back on call for a corporate group. It’s a great gig with not too much actual work, but requires me to be ready and available at any moment’s notice for anything they need.
I’m chipping away at my debt which is always in the back of my mind weighing me down. I’ll be relieved when it’s finally paid off and I’ll keep working until it’s finished.
Yesterday I sold a sculpture from Jen, Ian, and Alex Ubatuba that we started during our last session together. The piece features one of Alex’s LED light bases and a five prong spore with Jen’s millie at the heads. It’s incredible how the light interacts with the glass.
While everything else is going on we’re all getting ready for MibCon happening in Denver on March 13. I can’t believe it’s March.
I’m grateful for my sobriety right now, and for all the projects on my plate. I’m staying busy and working towards my goals. Sometimes things don’t move as quickly as I want but we’re going in the right direction and we’re not missing deadlines.
Overall I’m pretty stoked right now. It feels like everything I’ve been working on is finally coming to culmination. While it’s a lot at once, I’m keeping my head above water.
The other day I caught my brand new hoodie on fire from a candle while I was blowing glass. I also dropped a jar of pasta sauce and broke glass while not blowing glass. We had a bunch of successes that day as well. It feels funny or ironic. I guess you can’t make an omelette without breaking some eggs or something.
Thanks for being a part of the journey and for supporting our art. I’m not sure where I would be, but I know I wouldn’t be here without you.
Enjoy your Sunday,
BB
