On Sundays I reflect.
I didn’t drink alcohol this week. The consideration didn’t even cross my mind. Sometimes it’s like that. I haven’t had more than a sip of wine since last December, and I decided to stop drinking in 2018.
This week my friend, and one of the most talented artists I know, Andrew Pranger helped me get some of my art hung in my bedroom. I’ve been moved in the new spot for just over two months, which now feels more like home.
We got four of my paintings hung. Now I just need to figure out where to put the other few hundred pieces I’ve collected over the years.
The first piece to go up was my Drippy Rainbow Artist Print which Jen Stark traded me nearly a decade ago. This has been the center piece of my collection since I acquired it, previously positioned between two windows opposite the foot of my bed. It was the first thing I saw most mornings.
The newest piece in my collection, after many years of waiting, is an original painting by my friend Ethan Meyer titled “Quantum Two Way Mirror”. Now it lives opposite the piece of Jen’s, surrounding my bed in a psychedelic landscape.
For the hallway to my bathroom I chose two works. Straight on is a mandala piece from Dylan “Wigged Out Art” which has perfect symmetry from an artist (and friend) who employs free hand techniques and no tools or straight edges. Dylan is one of the most talented and underrated artists I know.
The other piece I chose for the side wall was a self portrait by Scout Zabinski titled “Apple A Day”. I got this piece last summer in Aspen from my friend Guy who owns Rusha & Co in Los Angeles.
I’d love to elaborate more on these works and what they mean to me, but I’m running out of energy.
Ultimately I’m just feeling relieved to have some of my art collection up on the walls, and now I can visualize where to fit more work around the primary pieces.
Right now I’m obsessed with a Kenyan artist named Thandiwe Muriu’s work, and it is at the top of my list to add to the collection. I’ll share more about that later, but I urge you to look her up and familiarize yourself with her work in addition to all of the artists I’ve mentioned in this week’s blog.
Both Andrew Pranger and Ethan Meyer told me that when they sell a piece of their own art, that they buy at least one piece of art from another artist. What a concept!
It snowed in Vail. Winter is coming. I relived the moment on the day before closing day last season when I found myself mid air flying off a cliff about 25-30 feet above the ground by mistake. There was this moment when the drum n bass and the ground were the only things I could process and everything else disappeared. Thankfully I didn’t hurt myself worse than a few days of soreness, but I know it could have been a lot worse.
I’ve got a busy week ahead with more on my plate than I’ll be able to manage. I’ll get done as much as I can, and that will be that.
There are some major trips ahead for me, which I’ll share more about in the coming weeks. If you’ll be in Philadelphia for Parlay this weekend, I look forward to reconnecting with community and friends there.
Now I need to keep my day moving, or the pile of work on my plate will remain incomplete.
As always enjoy your Sunday,
BB
