Sunday 1/16/22

January 16, 2022

On Sundays I reflect.

I didn’t drink alcohol this week. I quit drinking a few years ago and it’s a rare occasion that I drink these days.

Last Sunday I had a beer on the deck at Vail with my brother, who visited me for most of last week. We got a powder day, followed by the opening of Blue Sky Basin the next day. My brother’s childhood friend found himself living in the Vail Valley and he got to come take laps with us too. Those were definitely some of the best days of my season!

I didn’t have time to write my reflection last week because I was snowboarding with my brother. When I got to the studio I ran Sunday Specials and by dinner time we were both beat from the hill. We got up Monday afternoon for a third consecutive day and by the end my legs were jelly. It was definitely worth it. I took most of five days off work to spend with my brother. We spent time discussing the big picture of the business, but I was hardly at the studio or on my phone. Again, definitely worth it even if I have been making up for it all week.

Bat Country Studios is expanding into “The Annex” next door and we have been chipping away every day. Marta has been priming and painting, with some assistance from Jeremy OLDGREED and our friend Nick "Knotty Physics” made the trip up from Arvada for a day just to help out. I met Knotty last year when he got into collecting cups and attending my summer Vail Cup Collectors Club. He saw a post I made about the expansion and reached out to lend a hand. I traded him a cup for a day of help painting, moving large equipment, and helping with any random project that came up. I am so grateful for our community and the people who are helping to make my dream a reality. Thank you!

I have been on the torch a bit this week between all the projects, prepping for some solo and collaborative work for both Glass Vegas and the next Vail Cup Collectors Club next month. This is one of the first times that I am working on a body of work that is not immediately available. I wish I could share this stuff with you sooner, but I will be releasing it all in Vegas or at my show. VIP tickets have sold out for the VCCC but we still have GA tickets available at this link:

I’ve also spent much of this week on the phone with the artists on the VCCC lineup about their submissions. Another batch of work I am beyond excited to share with you. Sneak peaks will be coming soon, but as I say every time I think this will be our best event yet! Everything is coming together and again my thanks to the artists contributing and making it happen.

I want to write more today but I once again feel pressure to get to the studio and start blowing glass and running Sunday Specials. It’s amazing how many things are demanded of the entrepreneur simultaneously. I joked earlier this week with Marta as I tried fulfilling two orders at once from my computer and my phone. It was the busiest day of the week and Marta watched as I tackled projects all day without any breaks to breathe. I hit a wall while trying to print two labels at once and Marta jokingly called me a machine. I guess the funniest part is that I am operating a computer that is nearly 10 years old and hardly does the job forcing me to email every label from my phone to the computer to get it to print from the laser printer we got. If you want to be one of those people that asks “why don’t you just print it from your phone?” I would respond “WOW! What a genius idea! We never thought of that!”

Technology is not my best friend.

If you want to support our expansion please reach out to me about finding a special piece to add to your collection, or browse the website. We added brand new inventory this weekend and there is more on the way. As always I appreciate your support and hope you all enjoy your Sunday!

Thanks for tuning in,

BB
