Sunday Reflection: July 12th, 2020

July 12, 2020

On Sunday’s I reflect.

I didn’t drink alcohol this week, nor the week before.

I have been so busy that I am struggling to keep up with the blog. Sorry.

Update from the Studio

Earlier this week I shipped 14 packages in one day. We hit 200 sales on the website, 150 of which happened in the last year. I received more cups this week from artists around the country than any week prior. I am truly astonished at how fast things are picking up, and I am so grateful for all of your support!

I got on the torch a bit this week, primarily when a glass artist from Leadville came over for a lathe lesson. It was fun to make a few cups and show him how he can make cups at his home studio on his lathe. Hopefully we will be working together, considering we’re almost neighbors.

T-shirts are finally stocked on the website, with photos coming soon for each color in stock. It has been quite the process getting them listed, but now that the shirts are created it should be easier to update inventory as we continue printing more. If you haven’t gotten a shirt yet, each one is hand printed in our studio on super comfy Banana Republic deadstock shirts. I love mine and others say it’s the comfiest shirt they’ve worn through quarantine!

I got to test out my new camera with a girl from Salt Lake City who was visiting Vail after moving away last year. We had a quick shoot one night, and a few days later another girl came up from Boulder to shoot with me. It was a lot easier to get good pictures in the sunlight than my prior night shoot, but I am working with the models’ schedule. The second model and I went to my favorite hot spring an hour away and I got some of the best pictures I have ever shot. I borrowed Skinny’s 50mm lens and it is clear I will need to get one of those as well, but overall the camera is great. I am using a Nikon D5500 and suggest it to anyone out there.

I did make some time this week to go for a drive by myself. I drove seven miles down the road from my studio to Red Cliff and then up Shrine Pass (that’s where I snapped the picture at the top of the blog). It is important for me to make some time to get away from work and my phone, and it seems the only way for me to do that is when I am forced to. Snowboarding and other out-of-reception activities force me to take a break from being plugged in for some much needed me time.

Getting into the Routine

My gym routine is on point. I get 4-5 good workouts every week and I’m feeling better overall. I am still experiencing shoulder pain and unfortunately it is unclear when my acupuncturist will be back. I have the number for another specialist and plan to reach out this week.

I am pushing myself to read more, and I haven’t been able to get as into it as I have with the gym. I am celebrating the little victories, and trying to read at least a chapter or an article every day. Currently I am working on The Atlantic for articles along with How To Be An Anti Racist by Ibram X Kendi. Next up will be Me And White Supremacy by Layla Saad which my mom just bought me and came highly suggested.

CUPDATE

So we have been getting cups from Ed Wolfe @edwolfesgotglass every week or two and I can’t keep them on the shelf. I would consider these to be the best selling cups we carry and maybe in the handmade cup market overall. The colors are getting better every batch and I use multiple cups from them on a daily basis.

My shopmate Rob @logglass has been cranking out the wig wag bottom tumblers as well and after weeks and weeks of selling out we finally have stock coming to the site soon! His shot glasses recently stocked there too but we sold the Vintage Vibes tumbler and shot glass. His fresh patterns are original and fun, and I am especially digging the red honeycombs around his wig wags.

I got a fully worked cup from Freeek on the site after months or years without any since the last, and he’s working on more for me soon!

If you haven’t figured it out yet the boys at Everdream @everdreamstudio are working on a five way collaboration cup for my client that should be ready soon! I can’t wait to share that one with you, as it will certainly be the coolest cup I have ever come into contact with.

Lastly we have the first release of Schmitz solo cups coming after a 3-4 year wait. Erik and I made cups together years ago and he took until now to refine his technique and get me a batch. I have a blog interview with him coming soon to pair with the release that I am beyond excited to share with you!

Sorry it was short this week, but thanks for tuning in!
