Sunday 4/21/24 (A Day Late)

Sunday 4/21/24 (A Day Late)

April 22, 2024

On Sundays I reflect. Today is Monday but a day late is better than never.

I drank alcohol this week. I’ve been loose with myself about drinking lately. I haven’t been drinking that much especially compared to when I was at my worst. It has been more regular lately and ultimately I would prefer to not drink at all.

We celebrated Joel and Meghan’s wedding this weekend in New Orleans. Joel is one of my oldest friends and closest companions in life. People come and go, and as we grow up we see certain people less often. I’m pretty good at keeping up with my friends on the phone, but in recent years it’s become harder to balance my work life and commitments with spending quality time with my friends. I have loved getting to know Meg over the last few years and I’m so happy that Joel and she found each other. Truly an amazingly special fit of a couple.

Earlier this week in Vail we got a foot of snow, so you know I had to take out my snowboard and get after it. I was not expecting to be surfing through powder in the middle of April but I’m definitely not upset about it. I got almost 40 days on the hill this winter and no injuries so I’d say it was a good season for me.

I also spent some time on the torch last week, mostly prepping for the upcoming show at Stoked in Connecticut on May 18. I’m getting very excited for this show, and I’m feeling relatively prepared to get into assembly when I get home from this trip.

Currently I’m in Miami with my family to celebrate Passover before returning home to Vail. The mountain has closed for the season and this long weekend in New Orleans and Miami has me starting to think about Summer.

Two of my closest friends are Molly and Max. Together with Joel we have a group chat currently called the Cat Chat where we keep in touch. For Joel’s wedding we got a bnb together along with Max’s partner Angela. It was so nice for us to get to spend that time together. We ate some great food and lay by the pool one afternoon. We celebrated our friends being married and enjoyed catching up together.

The wedding was incredible. We gathered in an old church for a beautiful ceremony. I feel privileged to have been able to make a glass piece for Joel to smash in the Jewish tradition, and which later I will remake the broken shards into a piece the couple can keep forever. Thankfully Joel successfully smashed the glass. As the ceremony concluded, a gospel choir came out and sang for us as we walked next door for the reception. The party started with a surf rock band, who played one of the most fun Horas I have ever been a part of followed by a dj. After the reception we were greeted outside by a Second Line Brass Band that led us through the streets to the after party.

I had noticed a woman at the wedding but hadn’t had an opportunity to introduce myself until we bumped into each other on the balcony at the after party. She turned out to be a friend of Meghan’s from New Orleans. We ended up taking her dog for a walk and she pointed out the local flowers in the neighborhood. Sometimes I get intimidated and overwhelmed in social settings. This one happened organically and I’m glad we connected. It was a perfect way to end the evening.

Yesterday we wrapped up the festivities with a crawfish broil before I caught my flight to Miami. The whole weekend was a blast, and I’m so grateful to have these friends in my life. Lots of people come and go I’ve learned, and the ones who stick around are so special. I feel grateful for these lasting friendships in my life.

On that note I need to get back to being present with my family. As always thanks for tuning in.
