On Sundays I reflect.
I didn’t drink alcohol this week. I’m rare fashion I went out in Vail the last two nights. I thought about drinking both nights but I’m glad I didn’t.
It’s been a long and hard week playing catch up and preparing for the 7th annual Vail Cup Collectors Club. I spent a day in Evergreen collaborating with Eusheen and Ubatuba for the show, and had a few other meetings while I was there. I tried to take some time to be grateful to be where I am today. When I got into working with glass 13 years ago it was a dream to collaborate with these artists who have paved the way for our entire movement. Today that is a reality. I’m so honored and grateful for their support along with so many other artists in the scene.
We just welcomed guest artist Raj Singh to Bat Country Studios for a two week residency leading up to the show. Raj was one of the first artists to visit Bat Country Studios when we first opened. I’ll never forget racing him on our mini motor bikes in the parking lot, which you can still find footage of if you dig back on Instagram. Ishtar will be coming to collaborate on Tuesday and more artists are on their way to the mountains for the VCCC. Things are getting exciting around here!
My girlfriend is also coming to town this week, for what will be my first Valentine’s date in a decade. We are going to snowboard together on Wednesday and then watch my favorite film “The Royal Tenenbaums” for her first time. For dinner we will be going to the place in Vail where we first met this summer. We’ll likely play some music together at the house, as we often do when she visits. The rest of the week will be hectic for both of us, but I’m excited to spend Wednesday together doing things we both love. If we have time she might try melting glass for the first time, something special from my life that I want to share with her.
Tonight I am seeing my friend Michelle perform in “Young Frankenstein” with a local theatre group. I’ve missed most of Michelle’s shows since moving to Vail, but she’s always been supportive of me and my vision especially letting me live in her basement for a year. Even though this is one of my busiest times of the year, I prioritized making it to one of her performances this year because it’s not directly overlapping with my show. I’m thrilled to be able to see this one and support one of my oldest friends and fellow artists.
And of course, last but not least, my brother and his wife and their friends are visiting Vail next weekend and I’ll be spending time with them on and off the hill. Riding Vail with my brother is one of the most special parts of my life, dating back to the first time we hit the Legendary Back Bowls as kids in a complete white out. This will be my first time on the mountain with Pri and I can’t wait to show my sister in law the beauty that is Vail. I’ve made the commitment to stay out of the trees and away from cliffs so that we can all ski together. Typically I have my route on the mountain and I stick to it pretty strongly, but believe it or not I’m excited to ride groomers with her. She hasn’t been on skis since she was a kid, so after a day or two of lessons we are going to get to spend some quality time.
So now I need to eat and wrap up some work before tonight’s performance and a packed week ahead. As always I appreciate you tuning in and hope to see many of you at the Vail Cup Collectors Club February 24 at Bat Country Studios and the February 25 on the hill at Vail.
Enjoy your Super Bowl Sunday… or whatever…
