On Sundays I reflect.
I had two beers at Thanksgiving dinner. Spotted Cows have a sense of nostalgia for me. I’m glad I kept it to only two.
This week was a wild ride. It’s hard to believe it’s December already.
We got over three feet of snow in Vail. I wasn’t sure if my flight would make it out but thankfully that part went smooth.
My buddys Jensen and Tucker came up to start some part time jobs in the valley. We got to ride with other friends on perfect powder and I’m looking forward to getting more laps in with them this season.
I started a sculpture with Stan, we just need to make the stands when I get home. I’m really enjoying exploring this new body of work and looking forward to creating more non-functional decor. They are challenging pieces requiring problem solving in the design process and collaboration with Stan as the work evolves.
So I spent the week snowboarding and wrapping up things at home before making my way to Chicago and Wisconsin for Thanksgiving with my family. My flights were much easier than the previous trip to Memphis. Flying out of Eagle really is a dream. I even got myself on the standby list for an early connection that I caught in Denver rather than waiting three more hours for my now delayed original flight.
My family has gathered in Lake Geneva Wisconsin since the early 90’s for Thanksgiving at a place called the Grand Geneva. We have a pretty big group, and bump into family members in the lobby bar and the gym. Our family shows slideshows with photos from the years past and we spend time reminiscing about those who aren’t still with us. It’s a very special time.
Now I’m in Chicago on my friend Max’s couch saying goodbye to his partner Angela for the day and awaiting the arrival of our friend Molly for brunch. Joel and Meghan are in Japan on their honeymoon but it’s become an annual tradition to see these dear friends this time of year. I rarely visit Chicago and we don’t see each other often, but we keep in touch on our Cat Chat group chat as much as we can.
Tuesday I’ll head to Miami for Art Week again, for what might be my tenth year give or take. It’s always an incredible week with more to do that I can fit in my schedule. This year I have a few things planned as well as a lot of open time to explore the fairs. It will be a shorter trip than usual as I rush back to Vail Saturday for the Minturn Holiday Art Market hosted at our studio and The Barn studio across the street.
As hard as it is to step away from work right now financially, this annual trip is a bit of a necessary reset for me. A friend and I were talking recently when I realized I haven’t left my bubble in Vail for more than two consecutive weeks since I moved there.
It’s important for me to get out into the world from time to time.
Today, Max and I will spend some time at the Art Institute in Chicago before I get back to my folks in the suburbs.
Last night I found out Chase & Status were playing the Aragon Ballroom and I almost made the last minute move but didn’t end up going. It would have been a fun night of Drum N Bass but I’ve got a long week ahead of me and decided rest was more important.
I don’t always write about the sacrifices, and try to focus on the highlights. Life is full of choices and we can’t always have it all. That show would have been the icing on the cake, but this week was already so incredible I didn’t need to push it.
I am thankful for the people and opportunities in my life, even when things feel challenging.
